What to Plant in Michigan by Month

Greetings, fellow plant lovers! One question we often hear at Everett’s Gardens is “Are we still able to plant at this time of year?” As we look forward to spring, we would like to help answer this question and give recommendations on what to plant each month of the Michigan growing season. In our monthly blog post, we will highlight the specific Michigan climate that each month has during the year and how that can affect new plants in the landscape. This will help determine the best plant to plant during that time. Everett’s Gardens carries a wide variety of plant material, and we hope to give a couple of examples from each category of plants that are acceptable to plant each month.

The main categories we will cover in each monthly blog post are Perennials, Flowering Shrubs, Evergreens, Shade Trees, Ornamental Trees, and Japanese Maples. Keep an eye out for some bonus plants we might cover when the season calls for it! There will be times that we may caution Michigan homeowners about planting that month and give the reasons why planting at that time will be detrimental to the health of the plants in question. We hope to equip you with the know-how to grow the best plants with ease!

We look forward to informing our readers on the best planting practices for each month. Please join us as we embark on a fantastic 2025 plant season!
