Leslie’s Plant Picks of the Week

Every week we’re publishing a NEW Plant Picks of the Week story, showcasing our Plant Specialists’’ top plant picks. Get ready to be inspired!

We recently asked Leslie Hammond to share her top plant picks. Here’s what she had to say:

Green Giant Arborvitae

Thuja ‘Green Giant’

A stately looking upright evergreen that grows uniformly and is perfect for privacy or wind screening; very resilient and resists ice and snow damage, grows in almost any soil type

Wine and Roses® Weigela

Weigela florida ‘Alexandra’

A flamboyant new spring-flowering shrub, featuring rosy-pink trumpet-shaped flowers held over deep wine-colored foliage, attracts hummingbirds; a relatively compact shrub, ideal for garden detail use; needs full sun

Shadblow Serviceberry

Amelanchier canadensis

A naturally beautiful small tree, ideal for small home landscapes; masses of showy white flowers in spring, edible berries in June, and amazing fall color add up to a versatile landscape plant

Village Green Zelkova

Zelkova serrata ‘Village Green’

A close relative of the elm, a tall shade tree with a shapely, rounded habit, interesting peeling bark and good fall color; quite hardy, low maintenance and trouble-free, an excellent choice for street plantings or larger landscapes

Chicagoland Green Boxwood

Buxus ‘Glencoe’

A compact and hardy hybrid boxwood, great for pruning and shaping or for use as a trimmed hedge; if unpruned, grows more wide than tall, a broadleaf evergreen with numerous landscape applications
