We recently asked Brian Keuning to share his top plant picks. Here’s what he had to say:

Sungold Falsecypress

Chamaecyparis pisifera ‘Sungold’

A cultivar of threadleaf falsecypress with fine, almost string-like golden foliage all season long, giving an extremely fine texture; an extremely dwarf variety, ideal for color and texture detail in the garden

Albyn Prostrate Scotch Pine

Pinus sylvestris ‘Albyn Prostrata’

This vigorous spreader is an excellent ground cover that spills over banks and rambles through gardens; layered branches mound in the center with maturity; a blue cast adds interest to the thick green needles

Bloodgood Japanese Maple

Acer palmatum ‘Bloodgood’

Possibly the most popular of all feature trees for the home landscape, with rich burgundy-purple palm-shaped foliage all season long and a very artistic spreading growth habit; put it in the front yard and give it lots of room to grow

Heart Throb Chinese Dogwood

Cornus kousa ‘Heart Throb’

A magnificent flowering dogwood with rich pink flower bracts that last one to two months, much longer than other varieties, the deep pink hue is uncommon in this species; forms a small tree, ideal as an accent in the landscape

Shasta Doublefile Viburnum

Viburnum plicatum ‘Shasta’

A spectacular shrub when in bloom, smothered in clusters of snowy white flowers held atop the branches in spring; broadly spreading with attractive horizontal branching, showy red fruits and good fall color; striking when used in groupings
