Jacqueline’s Plant Picks of the Week – Sep 18 2023

Every week we’re publishing a NEW Plant Picks of the Week story, showcasing our Plant Specialists’’ top plant picks. Get ready to be inspired!

We recently asked Jacqueline to share her top plant picks. Here’s what she had to say:

Royal Frost Birch

Betula ‘Royal Frost’

An incredible accent tree for the home landscape with rich purple foliage all season long and beautiful white exfoliating bark; upright pyramidal habit of growth is a distinct improvement on the popular purple-leaf birch and Crimson Frost

Summer Fun Chinese Dogwood

Cornus kousa ‘Summer Fun’

A lovely upright dogwood with rich, contrasting green and white leaves, turning shades of red and pink in fall; covered in gorgeous white blooms in late spring; vigorous and tolerant of most soils except very wet or dry

Birds Nest Spruce

Picea abies ‘Nidiformis’

A small dense spreading shrub which develops a characteristic depression in the center (hence the name), very unlike the species; forms a neat compact evergreen ball, adaptable and hardy; excellent choice for form and texture in the garden

Red Maple

Acer rubrum

The tree that lights up New England yellow and red in fall; a great shade tree, but very intolerant of alkaline soils; fall color is not consistently red in the species, so the many named cultivars are often chosen

Yama Kagi Fullmoon Maple

Acer japonicum ‘Yama Kagi’

A stunning and shapely tree that is the ideal size for the home landscape, interesting in all seasons; large, deeply lobed leaves emerge lime green, turn a rich forest green in summer, then a stunning crimson-orange in fall.
