Every week we’re publishing a NEW Plant Picks of the Week story, showcasing our Plant Specialists’ top plant picks. Get ready to be inspired!

We recently asked Bailey Lackey to share her top plant picks. Here’s what she had to say:

Golden Ghost Japanese Red Pine

Pinus densiflora ‘Golden Ghost’

An interesting and very beautiful small accent shrub or small tree, featuring variegated green and yellow needles; needle tips are bright yellow in spring and persist through summer, fading to butter; ideal for general garden use, at its best in full sun

Black Dragon Japanese Cedar

Cryptomeria japonica ‘Black Dragon’

A popular loosely pyramid-shaped evergreen with very deep green foliage, slow-growing and graceful; an excellent choice for an accent with a distinctively Asian feel in the home landscape

Sky Pencil Japanese Holly

Ilex crenata ‘Sky Pencil’

A most unique and aptly-named evergreen shrub with an extremely upright and narrow habit of growth, superb choice for small-scale articulation in the garden creation, adds a level of dynamic interest; small leaves further add aesthetic value

Aoi Japanese White Pine

Pinus parviflora ‘Aoi’

A slower growing selection that will maintain a uniform and densely branched upright form; silvery blue-green needles appear bright making this an impressive selection as an accent tree; often trained into bonsai forms

Hetz Columnar Juniper

Juniperus chinensis ‘Hetz Columnar

A tall evergreen shrub with a narrow pyramidal habit of growth; sharp needle-like bright green foliage and abundant bluish-green berries, great for changing up the skyline in the home landscape, makes a great tall evergreen hedge; best in full sun
